Does a Sports Massage Have to Hurt?

Sports massage does not have to be painful to be worthwhile. Pressure should match your goal, health and tolerance, and you should be able to ask for less pressure or stop at any time.

Agree on the experience first

Tell the practitioner whether you want relaxation, help with general muscular discomfort or assessment of a specific problem. Mention recent injuries, surgery, medication and areas you do not want treated.

Ask how they want you to communicate during the session. You do not need to stay quiet because a treatment is called “deep tissue.”

Pain is not a quality score

A strong sensation does not prove that adhesions are being removed or that recovery will be faster. Sharp, burning, electrical or otherwise worrying pain should be reported immediately.

If you are holding your breath, bracing hard or waiting for the session to end, ask the practitioner to reduce pressure. Consent is ongoing; agreeing to an appointment does not mean agreeing to every technique.

The NCCIH massage guidance notes that harm is uncommon but possible, particularly with vigorous techniques or susceptible individuals.

What about soreness afterward?

Some people report temporary tenderness, but soreness is not a goal and should not be used to prove that the massage worked. Severe or worsening pain, substantial bruising, weakness or persistent altered sensation deserves medical advice.

Do not schedule an unfamiliar intense massage immediately before an important race, hard sparring session or other activity where an unexpected response would be disruptive.

Booking in Bangkok

Specify your pressure preference when booking and repeat it at the start. If language could be a barrier, agree on a clear stop signal before treatment.

Ask whether you are booking massage alone or an assessment-led appointment. Persistent pain may be better addressed through physiotherapy assessment than repeated harder massage.

If you are comparing manual treatments, read cupping versus massage. Choose based on an informed goal and a practitioner who listens, rather than the promise of the strongest pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Is painful massage more effective?

Pain is not a reliable measure of effectiveness. Pressure should be appropriate and tolerable.

Can I ask a therapist to stop?

Yes. You can request a change or stop treatment at any point.

Is bruising a sign of a good massage?

No. Bruising does not establish treatment quality or improved recovery.

Should I get deep tissue massage before a race?

Avoid unfamiliar intense treatment close to an important event, especially if you do not know how you respond.
